Easy Recover 12/20

Still feeling kind of rough from yesterdays run. Toe still numb, foot felt like it had a massive foot cramp. Tried to stretch it out some. Rolling helps a bit - nice knot in my calf that makes my big toe twitch when I roll it. Think I might be getting some feeling back after a short run. Going to try to lance the blister tomorrow. Really anxious, kind of annoyed I beat up my ankle so much. Think I can get through it. Ankle was a bit swollen today.

JG Long 12/19

Did a long run today with JG. Cruised through the beginning pretty quick and think we tanked towards the end - at least I did. Got some sleep last night, but not a lot. Ankle felt good going into it.

Run was supposed to be around 16, JG got lost and it ended up being 17. Would have been longer but we were going to go down one of the trails and with my huaraches I had to walk. JG walked with me, but it left my toes freezing. Huaraches felt good in the beginning, feet a little sore towards the end.

Afterwards my ankle is feeling a bit swollen, somewhat sore. Thought it would hurt worse. Legs are pretty sore, quads were ripped up as this was one of the hilliest loops I've done. I also picked up a blister under my big toe and it's left my toe feeling a bit numb. At first I thought it was the cold weather, second guessing that now.

J-Hill 12/10

Ankle a bit sore. More noticeable than before. Might be the shoes. Kind of annoyed, kind of scared - don't want to miss any races or long term training. Bah. Signed up for CBHM - sold out in 14 minutes. New huaraches today, smaller than the last ones, feel okay.

Ankle feels kind of bruised, tender. Felt okay in the beginning of the day, noticed it being tender when I stepped on a two inch lip and heel touched the ground. Wondering about going to a doctor...

Day Off 12/9

No sleep last night and really wasn't feeling that great. Took the day off. Ankles a bit sore today. Wore my old Ronin's at night. Stretching seems to make it feel better.

Re-strung my huaraches, but pulled the lace through the side while restringing them. Have to make a new pair tonight.

Marton 12/8

Okay run. Felt fairly decent going into it. Ankle a little sore. Wasn't too bothersome going downhill. With 2.4 miles to go I popped a rope on my huarache and ended up going barefoot. Wasn't too bad, but ground was wet and cold and there was a fair bit of man made gravel strewn about.

Day off yesterday. Another day at work on my feet all day. Ankle felt okay. Little sore on the run today, but not until I got to Juniper Inn. Did 1.75 barefoot. Toes got kind of numb towards the end. J-Hill 12/2

Day off yesterday. Ankle feeling weird. Tightness when I bend my toes too far down - like when I'm going downhill or stepping down stairs.

Did the whole run barefoot today. Brought my huaraches with me just in case, didn't put them on. Ground on J-Hill was a bit cold, but that wasn't the problem. The real problem was all the gravel they dumped on the sidewalks. Lots of sharp edges. Couple of blisters on the pads of my second and third toes. See if I can rectify it tomorrow.

J-Hill+ 11/30

Another day with another run. Cold out, snow on the ground. Ankle felt better than yesterday, but still semi-tight/full. The pain/tension comes when I'm flat footed and lean forward. It's behind the ankle, but above it. Think it's a tendon.

Some slipping in the huaraches on Juniper Hill where it get's snowy. Tried to keep the slipping to a minimum. Did an okay job. Not sure how it's going to go once the roads get really snowy...

Barefoot for 1.4 felt pretty good. Wore pants and pulled them up to my knees once I got warmed up. There was a little water on the roads, pretty sure it was the salt melting the snow which I should avoid, but my feet didn't really feel it. Might be getting a blister from the sock on the thong...

First run in a few days. Felt pretty good. Ankle a little sore going downhill. Really not sure what's up with it. Also not sure to call it dull pain or sharp pain. 2013 Goals

I did this last year, but it got lost on my old blog. I know I met some of my goals, but not sure which, and not sure which I didn't even come close. Going to do it again this year. Last year were pretty much all time oriented race results; this year I'm hoping to incorporate some other types of goals.

Mileage
Two years ago I went over 2000 miles for the year rather easily; this past year, for whatever reason, I'm going to just barely hit 1800. For 2013 I want to do 2000 miles. That's an average of 5.48 miles a day which should be doable. Of my 2000 mile goal, I'd like to do about 600 miles barefoot. I think it is a reachable goal, especially considering I'm doing around 13 miles a week barefoot now and it's winter.

Streaks
Longest streak this past year was 130 days with an average 7.16 miles per day. I'd love to go longer than 130 days, maybe a full half a year. Not really big on the miles per day though so...

Long Runs
I want to keep my weekly long runs around the 12+ range, and anytime I can get more I will. That said, I'd like to do at least one twenty miler every month (though this might be ambitious) and a couple of 30+ runs as well.

Injuries
Not much I can do about crazy wonky injuries like broken toes or car accidents, etc. I would like to keep the overuse injuries to a minimum. This shouldn't be a goal, but at the same time, I need to listen more and pay more attention to aches and pains. If I need to take a day off, or slack up on training, that's okay. I'd rather lose a day than a month.

Dead Skunk Goals
I'd like to meet another person or two in Windsor, or at least the Windsor area to do some training with. I've seen a couple people running who look like they could be faster. We'd need four to compete at the Harpoon Octoberfest, and with Justin and I, we'd only need two more.

Distance Specific Goals
I only have a few races I'll be able to compete in, and a few time trials. I have to be selective so... Some goals will be attainable, others are more of a two-five year plan.

1600
While I didn't race any 1600s in 2012, I did do two time trials. Both ended in 4:52s. Not bad. I think breaking 5:00 was one of my goals from last year. This year I'd like to get at least one race in. Probably end up running it at one of the Summer meets up in Hannover. Unfortunately, they meet on Thursdays so... Either way, I'd like to go sub-4:45. Pretty sure I could do it in a race, however just a time trial might lead to some difficulties...

5k
Don't think I ran any true 5ks this year. There were a couple on the list, but... The closest I'll come to racing a 5k is probably Harpoon Octoberfest. Kind of tough to put a goal on that one but I'd like to go under 19:45 - at least go through the 5k in sub-17:00. I also want to place in the top three and tally up some free beer.

10k
Another race I probably won't run many of. Probably one or two. Either the Troy Turkey Trot - which I'd rather - or the Hanover Turkey Trot. Ideally I could do the TTT and go 34:45. If I were to do the HTT I'd want to place in the top 3 and go sub 35:00. TTT is much flatter than the HTT.

Half Marathon
I think this is a big race for me this year. Performed quite well at CBHM in 2012 and like crap thanks to a vicious side stitch at CHaD. CBHM will be a trick because I'm not yet sure if I'm going to do the Shires which is two weeks before. Not sure how I'll fair if I run a marathon and then a half... Ideally this year I'd like to go under 1:15 at CBHM, though sub 1:16 would be decent. CHaD is a much tougher course, but all the same a 1:16:xx would be nice.

Marathon
Last time I ran a marathon was in 2011. Broke 3:00, but ran some awful splits. Think I might get two in this year. One in February and one in May. Have to double check but I think both are BQs. I'd love to get under 2:55 and qualify for Boston for 2014. Pretty positive I can run faster than a 2:55, just need to keep my splits about me, and do some training before hand...

Good race. Went out way too fast, but still decent time. Ankle was a bit wonky afterwards, though I'm not sure if it's too much mileage, too much with the stroller, wearing funny sandals for a bit. Got to keep it in check.

Barefoot Stroller 3.0 11/24

Another easy stroller run. Felt okay. Ankle was tight, but not as tight. I think it was worse pushing the stroller. I find I lean more, and I think that buggers up the ankle angle. I also think some of it might have to do with the part of my foot hitting the ground first. If I lift the outside of my foot and land more on the ball of my foot my ankle tweaks more. But I feel like my foot normally lands too much on the outside so...

Ankle Tweeeeaking 11/23

Don't really post just injury related, but figured as this is something ongoing, I would. There is some tweaking going on above my left ankle, sort of towards the back. I've self diagnosed as peroneal tendonitis, but that's a self diagnosis so who knows... It didn't really show up until after I dealt with my PFPS knee crap and that seemed to just go away with some minor stretching.

The Injury: The ankle has gotten better, and just recently in the last couple of days seems to have gotten tighter, or more painful. For the most part, it's  kind of a dull pain, or a fullness leaving my ankle feeling like it has a lack of flexibility. I've also noticed recently that it only seems to bother me when I'm going down hill... Not sure what it means, but something to think about.

The Plan: Since finishing training for the CHaD, no real important races coming up, a new baby almost here, and impending cold weather, I want to keep my miles low and give myself a break. The last three weeks have seen a mileage increase and this week will hit forty. I know it's not a lot, but I need to throttle back and let my stuff heal. I still want to do at least one long run of 12+ miles a week, a couple 5+ mile days, and as much barefoot mileage as I can. My weekly mileage is not a goal. Hopefully this helps and I can update this in a couple of weeks.

Thanksgiving '12 11/22

Got my long run in today. Left early. Cold. Warmed up a bit by the time I got done, but still cold. Started the run about 15 hours into a fast. Took no food or drink. Felt pretty good in that sense. Tough run this one. Lots of up and down on the way back. Have to work on my form some more. Almost lost it a couple of times going down steep hills in the slick mud. I think it just means more turnover with shorter strides, though I'm not sure how comfortable I am careening down hills...

Brook Rd. was out in two places. The first was more of a skitch along the stream, the second was an actual bridge out that was a bit daunting.

Ankle definitely more sore today. Mostly going downhill. Toes really cold to start, warmed up towards the end.

Well... Was going to go for a long run today. Fasted and was ready to go, but the Wife wasn't feeling well, so I waited and fasted some more until nap time. But nap time never came so I didn't have a whole lot to eat all day. Cranky. Hungry. Ended up just doing a short four miles. Agitated about it. Going to do a long run Thursday then.

Felt decent from yesterday. Ankle sort of sore/tight, not sure if it's from the run yesterday or because my flip flops broke and I had to wear some crap sandals. Did a couple miles in the forest, and then around J-Hill and back. Fair bit of barefoot.

Hanover Turkey Trot 11/18

Did the Hanover Turkey Trot 10k today. Got the email a couple of days ago and signed up the day of. Felt pretty good. Bumped into Ahall again, and figured I'd go out with him as I beat him at Harpoon and he whooped up on me at CHaD. Unfortunately, his pacing is as whack as mine. Ended up going out with the leaders and went through the first mile in 5:04... Not the best way to go out. Had a turkey burger with some water about four hours prior to the race, and nothing in-between.

Thought I was going to be able to break 35. I think I was on pace for it through at least four miles (21:55) but I can't recall my splits after that. Still pretty pleased with the race and the results.

Stroller 3.9 11/15

Short easy run. Chickens and hate mail about the dogs got me all spun up. Run was slow and I wasn't feeling it. Ankle feels good, except when I start with the stroller. I really need to concentrate on that form. Going to be tough. Bruise on my foot is pretty much gone. No tenderness. Should have done some barefoot. Need to do more of my miles barefoot while I still can.

Lower Parsonage 11/12

Felt pretty good. No tightness in the ankle. Did the first 9 or so in huaraches, the last 2.5 barefoot. Have a bit of a bruise in the center of my left foot. Felt a bit sore, then I rubbed it and felt it even more... Beautiful run. Fog, sun rays, streams, trees. Warm day too. Definitely not a November run.

Stroller 5.0 11/9

Stroller run today. Felt okay, ankle sort of tight. Definitely not great. A lot has to do with my form. It'd be easier if it was all flat, unfortunately, the terrain doesn't allow for it... Definitely easier to do barefoot. Got a weird raw sort of sensation behind my second toe on my left foot. Might be the rough pavement finally eating up my callouses and causing some blisters. Wouldn't be a bad thing, but not sure why or how it would happen there.

Did a bit of a longer barefoot stretch today. Was going to just do a couple of short loops and call it a day, but decided to go for a bit more. Cold blustery day, wore socks to start, took them off 1.2 in. Barefoot for 2.6. Trying to work on my form a bit more and get that ankle tweaking to go away. I think I need to do more knee bending and land with my feet having less impact. Still getting a wear spot on the outside behind my pinky toe. Again, not sure why, but time will/ought to tell.

Most of the tightness seems to happen when I land on my toes as if I was stuffing them into the ground. If I sit back more, but land on my toes, knees bent, seems to feel better. Need to keep that in mind...

Election Day 6.0 11/6

Easy run. 4.5 over to Juniper Hill and back. Did a mile and a half around the house barefoot. Felt pretty good. Wore the green wool socks with the huarches, seemed to work pretty well. Feet were warm, little sweaty at the end, but warm. Not sure how good they'll be when it gets really cold, but they work for now. Surprised at how good my feet felt when I went barefoot.

WTF 11/5

Cold, cold, cold. Flurries this morning. Got out this afternoon and went for a shorter run. Not too much, but I'm trying to take it easy for a bit. Getting excited about some of the races coming up. Gotta take it easy and make sure not to overdo things. Ankles a little tight/sore, but not awful. Hopefully taking it easy is enough to let things heal.

Doing more barefoot mileage. Feet feel pretty good. Air temp was 38/40 when I was running, not sure the ground temp. Noticing the big toe on my huarches is being worn smooth, not sure if that's normal or if that's just normal wear and tear. I'll ask around...

SSSB BV 11/4

Did the Sunset Strip Bitch Loop. Little shorter than from River Street. Felt pretty good. Ran barefoot from the beginning of Sunset to Townhouse, only a mile, but it was on hard pack so... My feet really don't bother me on the hard pack. Not sure I'm really up for big miles barefoot, but I can definitely do some. Gotta keep taking things slow.

Down in the lower 40s (41 to be precise) but didn't seem to bother things at all. Also managed to run fasted. Dinner at 7:00 last night, fell behind an hour; didn't get back until 1:00ish. 19 hours.

Another easy day. Couple of loops barefoot around the neighborhood. Calf feels okay. Would like to start doing a little more, but still some tightness in the back of my ankle. Feels like some loss of range of motion, though I'm not sure how or why.

BF Loop 11/1

First day in a few days. Been trying to work on diet a bit - going more Paleo. Still getting a bit of wheat in my diet, but not as much. Trying to get more meats and fat from meat. More fruits. Thinking I'm actually eating better.

Decided to take some time off, so instead of going hardcore just going to do some easy light stuff. More barefoot stuff. Really just want to let things heal - i.e. my ankle. Felt pretty good all things considered.

Was going to do an easy run, did some easy to the town forest, then my right calf started getting tight again. Stopped and did a bit of jogging (mushroom picking) then ran home. Probably 3 miles or so. Really slow. Not sure what's going on. Pissed.

VA Home 10/25

Didn't run yesterday. Went real short the day before on some trails. Didn't enjoy it. Wasn't sure how long today was going to be. Drove the Wife to work so I could drop the Little Guy off with her at the end of the day and she could go to her shower. Bit long from Lebanon and wasn't sure I was up for it so just trucked it home from the VA. 14.7 miles. Route 5 until Hartland, then a blip to avoid the four corners.

Felt pretty good, though my calf tightened up towards the end. Not really sure why. Think it was just a cramp. Hope it was just a cramp. Same calf as before.

Where To Now?

So with the CHaD bombed and no Turkey Trot, I think it's time for a bit of time off. Maybe. I'll probably keep at things - 15/30 miles a week. Try to do some yoga. Rest my ankle. See if it gets better.

For next year I want to run at least one half and at least one full marathon.

CHaD Half 10/21

Total choke. Last three weeks or so have been hell training. Low miles, nothing on the track. Really dogged it, and it showed today. Pacing was off something fierce. First mile was 6:00, then 5:30, then 6:30. Go figure... They started the 5k and Half together so I wasn't sure what to do. I wanted to go out with the leaders, but previously some fast 5ks had been run so I didn't want to get caught up in it... Bad idea. Not to mention the 100 Jack Asses all racing out of the gate and stopping 100 yards later.

I managed to get into third by a good 30 seconds or so, and then I had a nasty side stitch of the likes I've never seen and I actually stopped... First race in my life I've stopped. I stopped for 1:30 - 2:00 minutes got passed by third and fourth place. Finally caught up to fourth place, and then just sort of gave up. Stopping totally did me in mentally. Got passed by two more guys in the last 100 yards just because I didn't give a shit. Embarrassed of this race. Not even sure my time right now - 1:21:xx.

Time for a break I guess...

Catch Up 10/11

Well... Not sure how much mileage I've done since I last posted. Probably not much. This last month has been pretty sloppy. Totally unmotivated to run and with all the house stuff going on, it's too easy to not run. Forced myself out the day before Octoberfest. Forced myself out today; I've just got to hang on a bit until this CHaD Half is done and then I'm taking a break.

My right ankle is kind of buggering up. Pain starts on top of the ankle, towards the back, but moves toward the inside of calf. Don't think it slows me down but it is uncomfortable. Might be tendonitis, or some other overuse thing.

Octoberfest went okay. Wore the huraches - regular shoes hurt my ankles at this point - and got some looks. Really wanted to place in the top three - didn't. I went out slow, and negative split, but probably should have gone out faster. Instead of going with the leaders I tried to play catch up. The first two guys were 5:10ish, so they were probably out of the picture, but I could have gotten third - and a shit ton of free beer. Oh well. Next year?

Another fairly decent week. Had to cut my 1200 workout short because my calf started to get tight. Glad I did I think. Probably could have pushed through it, but who knows what would have happened with my 4/3/2/1. Did the 4/3/2/1 and did it well. On pace, felt good. Sore, but good. Ankles not a good sore, achey on the outside. Feel like I'm kind of losing steam with the running thing, maybe it's the change of weather or that there's a lot going on - house, baby, etc. - I'm not sure. Think getting through the 4/3/2/1 injury free helped my mental state though.

Nice workout. Was a little apprehensive getting started. Wasn't sure my legs were up to it. All the niggling injuries over the past few weeks have kind of made this running thing enjoyable. Just looking forward to CHaD and then a break. Today felt good though. Legs and hip flexers are a bit sore, but it's a good tired sore.

Decent workout. Wasn't what I had planned, but still pretty good. Was talking with brother coach and went into it not exactly sure what to do. I was debating doing 2x1600@I and 2x1000@I. I was going to do it, but got to the 1200 mark of the 1600 and pulled out.

These workouts that run through all paces are pretty tough. Legs are tight and sore, but it's a good sore.

5x1600 1x3200@T 9/4

Was going to do a long run, but things got pushed back to the end of the day. Figured I might as well go to the track and get my workout out of the way. Maybe do a long run tomorrow. Things felt pretty good all in all. Legs are tired, ankles a bit sore, right calf is sort of tight.

Weekly plan called for 6x1600, ended up doing 5x1600 plus 1x3200. Last 3200 was tough, but got it done. Goal pace was 5:50, average pace was 5:44. Quicker than I wanted, but not bad all the same. Minute rest.

Easy family run. Went barefoot. Really slow. Calf was sore today. Trying to rub it down and massage it thoroughly. Not really sure what's going on. Definitely not going to hit my weekly goal, guess it was a bit high for a busy week, but... Hopefully, next week will be better.
